Overview:
The department of biotechnology at WCAS was
established in the year 2003 with a vision to
contribute to generating new knowledge and awareness in the
field of biotechnology in Oman.
The department has evolved from its nascent stage in 2003,
to the present stage of developing high end research
projects.
Program:
The department offers four year under
graduate program in biotechnology, BE (Biotechnology) which
is unique in Oman. The focus of this program is on the
industrial processing of biological / biochemical products.
The department provides integrated approach towards
education incorporating class room teaching and original
research by students in their teaching and learning process.
Laboratory:
The department has good laboratory facilities
which are being continuously upgraded. The UG laboratory
courses are designed provide students with excellent
preparation in various protocols and hands-on skills used in
biotechnology companies.
Research activities of the department:
The department visions to make impact on
education through research and technology based training.
The department focuses on Renewable Energy as their prime
research field and the research projects target studies that
of national importance. With this in view the department
currently focuses on research in:

Algal Flora of water bodies around Oman
and their potential in the production of biofuel and
various biochemicals.

Fermentative production of xanthan gum
from indigenously available raw materials of Oman.
Other areas of research like development of
biosensors are also being studied.
